Failing Alternator

The most important part of your car’s electrical system is the alternator. The alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into DC power for your car’s systems. Alternators have a useful life of approximately eight years, and then they need replacement. As the alternator gets older, its electricity production gradually slows down.

Your car’s demand for electricity is relatively stable, which means a failing alternator will eventually be unable to supply all your car’s electricity demands. When this happens, random electrical issues will occur. Systems like the windows, moonroof, and radio could suddenly fail unexpectedly due to lack of power. We can quickly test your alternator and install a new one if necessary.

Blown Fuse

All your Ford’s electrical systems and devices have fuses. These fuses protect the components they’re attached to from electrical shorts and spikes. The fuse will absorb an electrical charge and blow out. When this happens, the system connected to the fuse will shut down until the fuse is replaced. The first warning you’ll have that a fuse has blown is that its attached component suddenly won’t work.

A blown fuse will illuminate the battery light and could also illuminate the check engine light, depending on which component has shut down. If the alternator fuse blows, the alternator won’t produce electricity, and your car’s systems will begin to shut down. We can quickly and easily replace blown fuses for you. Our technicians will check the fuses and install new fuses.

Damaged Ignition Coil

An ignition coil is connected to each spark plug. The spark plug ignites the fuel-air mixture in its cylinder to produce combustion. A plug can only generate 12 volts, which is insufficient to ignite a cylinder’s contents. The attached ignition coil supplies its spark plug with 30,000 volts, which is more than sufficient to generate combustion.

A coil can fail due to age, and it can also be damaged if its connected spark plug fails. A failed spark plug can easily burn out the coil as it will continually try and supply power to the failed spark plug. We’ll examine the coils and replace any damaged ones for you.

Our experts can fix most problems with the electrical system while you stop in. If you suspect you have a problem, call our service department today at Beachum and Lee Ford, Inc.
